- Madden 18: Tips For Newbies And Even Some Veterans To Find Success When Compete Against Opponents

I've been playing Madden 18 for a little over a week, learning the nuances of the newest version from the series and I've come up with a few tips and strategies that can help newbies and even some veterans find success.

Play the Man Or Swat In One-on-One Situations

One-on-One matchups can be a nightmare for defensive backs–especially against elite receivers. The best way to survive these situations is to keep a safety near the most dangerous downfield weapons.

However, that's not always possible. When you are in man-to-man, it's best to resist the temptation to go for the interception–especially in jump-ball situations.

The higher percentage play is to press A/X to swat the ball, or X/square to make contact with the receiver. You'll break up more passes this way, or at worst, limit the run-after-the-catch yardage.

Pick Your Spots To Go For The Pick

There are times when it's advisable to go after the interception. The best time for this is when you're controlling the safety and your cornerback is already bodying up with the receiver.

Essentially, the corner's presence is the equivalent of pressing the swat or play-man button, and that frees up the safety to ball hawk.

As the corner, playing the risk-reward game going for the pick is tricky, but it's safer when the receiver is running an out or a slant.

That's a better opportunity to jump the route and cut in front of the intended target. Resist the urge to go for picks on vertical routes.

Don't Lean On Aggressive Catch

In Madden 17, the aggressive catch mechanic was a bit overpowered. That's not the case in Madden 18.

Jump balls are far more realistic and using the aforementioned defensive techniques makes this play less successful than it used to be.

Bigger receivers with good hands and leaping ability can still find success when the quarterback throws it up for grabs, but it can't be counted on as a go-to play–unless of course it's in the end zone, which is the way it should be.

Know Your Ball Carrier's Strengths

The new attribute-based ball-carrier moves add a new layer of realism. It also forces gamers to learn the abilities of their playmakers.

If your running back doesn't possess a high juke or elusiveness rating, you probably won't want to spam the agile moves buttons. Find out what they do well and try to use those moves primarily to obtain the highest level of success.

Vary Your Special Moves

Each ball-carrier move has an enhanced level that can be triggered by holding either trigger/back button on the controller. Speed moves are enhanced with the RT/R2 button while power moves are better utilized with the modifier LT/L2.

Mix up the moves according to the situation and the ball carrier.

Don't Neglect Player Development In Connected Franchise

In most sports games, player development isn't really necessary. There's usually a mention of it in between games, but if you choose to ignore that part of the franchise mode experience, there aren't any real consequences.

Thankfully, that's not the case in Madden 18.

If you do not develop your young players or tend to average veterans, their skills can regress and the few attribute points that they lose can be felt on the field.

The star players aren't as volatile, but the fringe guys and the prospects are still important pieces to your puzzle.

If you're playing Connected Franchise for the long haul, you'll want to manage this part of the game.

Be Aware of Ball Security With Your Quarterback

There's a new ball physics mechanic built in to produce more realistic fumbles–and it's especially visible with quarterbacks who lose the ball while being sacked.

When a quarterback is about to throw the ball, he must be aware of the pass rushers now more than ever. If he's hit with his arm in any part of the throwing motion, there's an increased chance of a fumble.

If his arm is going forward, it'll be ruled an incomplete pass. If it hasn't yet begun to move forward, it'll be a fumble.

Because of this, you must understand how long it'll take for your QB to release the ball and quickly decide if you can get the pass off. If you are caught in the throwing motion, you're opening the door for a potential turnover.
