Star Wars: The Old Republic has never been exactly what we want it to be. Though some of us have stuck with it since its launch in December 2011, we know it's still not ideal in 2014. And so does BioWare. "We used to talk about this as KOTORs 3-through-10," the game's executive producer, Jeff Hickman, told me in November. "And I don't think that we met that promise." Then you're kicked back to a menu screen to create your character. The creator is quite flexible, with a wide range of customization options unique to each race, but you're limited only to strictly humanoid races and a few rather similar body sizes (males at least get a "fat" option – female characters don't even get that). For a universe with a vast number of established intelligent races of all shapes and sizes, this feels limited. You can't, for example, play as a Jawa or a droid. In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor annoyance though.

The Storyline is the game’s strongest point, creating a unique experience for each base class (8 in total). The voice acting is top notch and the story-select options available to a player range from the comical to the disturbing. While younger players can enjoy SWTOR, some of the branches in the storyline (such as killing an entire family) are very adult in nature. The stories are also very different for the classes; while a Sith Inquisitor pursues the Dark Counsel, a Bounty Hunter engages in the Great Hunt. The game also does a fantastic job of making you feel as if you are truly changing the shape of the galaxy. I don’t know of another MMOG that has this level of immersion (in part due to the way it’s presented) with such diverse core stories.

Galactic Starfighter isn't such a rigid construct that there aren't different archetypes for players to mold into a ride that's perfect for them. The gunship, strike fighter, and scout are all formidable choices, and the bomber, a fourth choice, will be available mid-February. Players tend to flock to the strike fighter, which closely resembles the X-wing and Y-wing fighters even Star Wars casuals are likely familiar with. This model strikes a nice mixture of offense and defense, where the maneuverable scout is peppier and fantastic for those who just want to zip in guns blazing and get out of a tight situation fast. The indomitable gunship offers formidable cannons, but it's the slowest of the trio.

With its only real selling point reduced to offering mediocre storytelling in a sterile, lifeless version of the Star Wars universe, The Old Republic doesn't have much to fall back on. As a game, it shoots for adequacy and often hits it. Even so, it's a clumsy adequacy weighed down by the fact that, while it does provide player-versus-player and story-based dungeons and endgame content as the genre demands, most of its best content would have been much more enjoyable done as a single-player game. The only real advantage of getting it as an MMO is that we were never likely to see, say, Sith Inquisitors of the Old Republic, making this the only way for most of the classes to strut their stuff. After the faction world is complete, then you gain the use of a starship and can travel the galaxy! But you can’t really. You can theoretically go to any planet on the galaxy map, but unless you’re of the appropriate level for that world, then you can’t do anything except look at the pretty visuals and backdrops just outside the spaceport. All classes within a faction follow a general progression through the various worlds, but that isn’t a problem due to the deep and engaging story line for each class. It’s Star Wars, and the stories feel like Star Wars. If you’re a fan, it’s freaking free, might as well download it and give it a try. It’s fun, truly fun.

The Old Republic comes wrapped in an audio package that you?d expect from a title bearing the Star Wars branding. Combat and ambient sounds are spot on, and add to the overall immersion and fantasy of stepping into the Star Wars universe as an active participant in galactic events. The same could be said of much of The Old Republics music, but there?s also a hitch. Having heard thematic interludes in the style of John Williams' original 1970s score for the past three decades, my ears tend to filter it out more often than not.
