Though not having direct control over your troops in combat is initially frustrating, the choice of landing zone and use of flares gives you a simplified rule set that builds in complexity over time. This mostly automated system made for both exciting victories and agonizing defeats that I grew to love. You’ll also be able to use a support ship off the coast to shoot flares, send in first aid kits, or even lay waste to the enemy camp with guided missiles. I couldn’t help but get excited every time I had enough points to fire off another missile from the ship. The mixture of pre-battle strategy, real-time attack simulation, and active support makes for a very engaging experience that not many IOS games have captured.

 

Who can blame Supercell for trying to replicate the same success? Clash of Clans is one of the highest grossing mobile games, amassing an alleged $3 million a day worldwide in in-app purchases. Boom Beach also has a premium currency based on diamonds, but where Clash of Clans menacingly dangles the threat of other players invading you unless you pay for a ‘shield’, Boom Beach’s currency is solely for speeding up the time it takes to upgrade buildings, at least in the early levels. As is the norm in freemium games, upgrading takes longer/costs more diamonds as you advance, however, we found it much easier to obtain diamonds for free in Boom Beach than most games of its ilk, with the treasure chests we discovered on the map screen regularly replenishing with jewels.

While the overall storyline does seem cheap and a bit rushed, the fact that Supercell even decided to include a story in what is basically a reverse tower defense game is fairly impressive. Likewise, the amount of variety in terms of units included in the game is also quite good. There are 10 unit types to choose from, which have to be unlocked gradually, but the colossal amount of defenses present a nightmare for any would-be attacker.
