Honestly, I don’t hit the MMO genre as hard as I used to. Everquest, World of Warcraft, EVE-Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online… I’ve dumped a considerable amount of time into a wide variety of titles across various genres and systems. At this point it takes a serious amount of innovation to turn my head in the direction of a new MMO release, even if the title is free to play. Let’s be straight – Archeage has the innovation. It boasts a tremendously deep farming and crafting system with an economy so thoroughly player run, it approaches the virtual economy juggernaut that is EVE-Online in terms of depth and breadth. It offers PVP – not ‘go over to this hermetically sealed off zone where death doesn’t matter’ PVP, but full-blown “lose some of your items / gain some of your fallen foe’s loot” PVP.
 
Not only that, it’s launching with ocean exploration and ship to ship combat – the sort of thing an MMO typically promises at some vague point in the future, then takes one or two years to get to. So with all this being promised, what’s the final verdict? Simple: Archeage’s innovation outshines the flaws it have, and is currently weighed down largely by server queues that can reach upwards of an hour of real-life time. ArcheAge utilizes CryEngine 3 to great effect, with visuals that are astounding for a free-to-play MMO. From stunning mountain vistas to moon-covered seas, the game is a visual treat to behold during gameplay. My only issue with the game's presentation is that the soundtrack wasn't particularly interesting and didn't contain that many tracks for variety through hours of extended gameplay. Some of the in-game characters also still spoke in Korean which was odd when their dialog text was in English. Sound effects also didn't seem overly polished and lacked depth in the game's overall scope.

 
Other then those minor presentation issues, my other gripe with ArcheAge was an overall lack of guidance in how to go about tasks, such as buying land or constructing a boat. The basic role-playing elements were easy to pick up, but the game's more advanced sandbox elements often had be researched online to fully understand their mechanics. Every action a player performs is felt by hundreds of others, from the humble crafters to the infamous pirates. This is EVE Online but with actual ships. That’s not to say it doesn’t have some less favourable traits. Some systems - like the player ran trial - feel a bit half-baked. And the notorious Korean love for plain old grinding - namely with questing - rears its ugly head every now and again.
 
Another thing that stands out in ArcheAge is its crafting. For crafting you need labor points. Labor regenerates 5 per five seconds and is also used for things like farming and other non-combat activities. You can make the best pieces of equipment in the game, but for that you will need luck because crafting high-level items gives you a random result. Other than weapons and armor you can craft things like furniture for your home and trade packs. Trading is basically crafting a trade pack and getting it from point A to point B. The greater distance between A and B, the more gold you will get. It can be really dangerous with other people (pirates) trying to ambush you and steal your pack, but it just adds to the fun of the game. Travel to Freedom Island with a cart and donkey stacked with your goods, and maybe strike it rich with Delphinad’s Star special reward. Conquer the sky with flying contraptions called gliders by exploring mountains, putting on an airshow with friends, or having a sky battle with a foe. Sail a giant naval ship out to sea and seek new lands, fighting sea monsters and opposing forces. Join up with a group of allies and take part in a giant siege battle, or get away from all the adventure and spend quality time at your house by creating items and decorating your home.
 
While it might not be the most impressive MMO out there, ArcheAge manages to provide a ton of value and it just removes the whole idea of restrictions. You can play as who you want, how you want and when you want. Not only that, but each action comes with repercussions, pretty much like in real-life. I found ArcheAge to be enormous and filled with a lot of interesting stuff. However, the best part about it is that us, the community, we are able to shape the future and present of this game. It’s the first true sandbox MMO on the market, and it’s one of the most impressive experiences you can check out right now. Rest assured, ArcheAge is more than a simple MMO, it’s a great social experience that everyone will enjoy and appreciate.
